This 1936 propaganda film took on a life of its own when the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws dug it out of the Library of Congress in the early 1970s. Since then, the movie has become a cult hit among modern audiences, who appreciate the story line's comedic value. In short, a group of teens seduced by the power of "reefer" take a few puffs -- and instantly become psychotic killers, jazz addicts and whores.

Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola spins a unique love story that combines elements of suspense and science fiction. Set in pre-World War II Europe, the film follows an academic (Tim Roth) who's metaphysically altered after being struck by lightning. This begins a spiritual journey through time toward divine love, a journey in which the professor grows younger and more enlightened even as his nation is on the brink of war.

The Score

Their remake of "Killing Me Softly" was the hit, but that's only the beginning of the story. A hip-hop trio whose talents reach out into the world of the pop song (Wyclef Jean is a fine guitar player, and Lauryn Hill's a heck of a singer), the Fugees are also all distinctive, inventive rappers--you find yourself waiting for each of them to take the next verse in turn. The beats are the familiar crossed-armed boom-bip, but the group's understated grooves and subtle effects lie low in the mix. Aside from two kicky covers of classics (the other is Marley's "No Woman, No Cry"), The Score's focus is on the stars' rhyming with the free-form grace of performance poets and showing that they've thought deeply about the issues they raise. --Douglas Wolk

An engineer builds a machine (quite by accident) that can transport the user back in time. But his discovery comes with an ominous caveat, because at the heart of this puzzling device, nothing is as it seems on the surface. The narrative inventively blends a patchwork story line with overlapping streams of dialogue that help build tension and suspense in this Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner. David Sullivan and Shane Carruth star.
